Nikki Williams is a consummate birth professional. In addition to having served over 70 families as a birth photography pioneer in Maryland, Germany and the UK, Nikki is a birth doula, Certified Lactation Counselor, APPA Certified Placenta Arts Specialist, and student CPM midwife with National Midwifery Institute. She is also a volunteer bereavement photographer with Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.
Most recently she has returned to the USA after a two-year midwifery apprenticeship with a collective of independent midwives in Yorkshire, England, where she witnessed and photographed an incredible spectrum of births. As a result, Nikki believes that “everything is possible in birth,” and she has experience with cultures from all over the world and with families in their many forms.
Nikki’s interest in birth has always been flowing under the surface; from early childhood, through her service as an Arabic translator in the United States Air Force and her work for the Department of Defense, and until she finally heard ‘the calling’ when she gave birth with midwives in 2009. Her friend made it just in time to photograph her daughter’s emergence, and the resulting images meant so much to Nikki that she decided to end her 10-year career to preserve these same priceless memories for other families. Nikki loves providing the little extra details- like birth pools and small tweaks of a newborn’s latch- that make a birth experience complete.
Her words and images have been published in Squat Birth Journal, Midwifery Today, Midwifery Matters (Association of Radical Midwives), Huffington Post, and more.
Nikki is available to photograph births in the Kent and Sussex counties of Delaware (Dover, Georgetown, Milford), or at any location within 1.5 hours of her home on Kent Island, MD.
